The Legendary King of Pop

Born in Gary, Indiana on the 29th August 1958, Michael Jackson was the eighth child of the Jackson family. After being the lead singer of The Jackson 5 making he’s debut at the age of just 6. He began his solo career in 1971 whilst with Motown Records and in the early 1980’s Michael became a prominent figure in the music industry. His music videos Beat It, Billie Jean and Thriller from his 1982 Album broke racial barriers and helped bring the television channel MTV to fame. Michael’s 1987 Album Bad was the first album to have five number one singles in the U.S. 100 Billboard, featuring; I Just Can’t Stop Loving You, Bad, The Way You Make Me Feel, Man In The Mirror and Dirty Diana. He continued to innovate videos such as; Black or White and Scream and throughout the 1990’s forged a reputation for a touring solo artist. Through stage and video Michael performed a number of complicated dance techniques, such as the robot and the moonwalk, to which he gave the name. His distinctive sound and style has influenced numerous artists of various music genres.

Thriller still is the best selling album of ALL time, with estimated sales of over 66 million copies worldwide. Jackson’s other albums, including; Off the wall, Bad, Dangerous and HIStory also rank among the world’s best selling albums. He is one of the few artist to have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of fame TWICE and was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Dance Hall of Fame, as the only dancer from pop and rock music.

Due to Michael’s success he bought the Sycamore Valley Ranch in 1988 and renamed it Neverland Valley Ranch. It was Jackson’s home as well as his private amusement park and it contained a floral clock, numerous artistic garden statues featuring children, and a petting zoo. The amusement park included two railroads: one 3 ft narrow gauge named Neverland Valley Railroad with a steam locomotive named Katherine after his mother, the other a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge with a locomotive named C. P. Huntington. There was also a Ferris wheel, Carousel, Zipper, Octopus, Pirate Ship, Wave Swinger, Super Slide, roller coaster, bumper cars, and an amusement arcade.

Michael’s other achievements include multiple Guinness World Records including the Most Successful Entertainer of All Time. 13 Grammy Awards, the Grammy Legend Award, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, 24 American Music Awards (more than any other artist) including the Artist of the Century, 13 Number One Singles in The United States during his Solo Career (more than any other male artist) and an estimated sales of over 350 million records worldwide. Michael has won hundreds of awards, making him the most awarded recording artist in the history of popular music. Michael became the first artist in history to have a top ten single in the Billboard Hot 100 in five different decades when Love Never Felt So Good reached number nine in 2014.

Michael is also remembered for his philanthropy and pioneering efforts in charitable fund-raising in the entertainment industry. He travelled the world attending events honouring his humanitarianism and in 2000, the Guinness World Records recognised him for supporting 39 charities, more than any other entertainer.

Whilst preparing for his comeback concert series due to take place in London O2 Arena, This Is It, Michael died in his rented home at Carolwood Drive, Los Angeles of acute propofol and benzodiazepine intoxication on June 25, 2009, after suffering from cardiac arrest. The Los Angeles County Coroner ruled his controversial and untimely death a homicide and his personal physician, Conrad Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter. Michael’s death triggered a global outpouring of grief, and a live broadcast of his public memorial service was viewed around the world.
